Step-by-Step Guide on How to Install Fiberglass Pools

Installing an inground fiberglass pool requires heavy machinery and specialized knowledge. This guide provides a detailed overview of the process for Fluid Float inground fiberglass pools, but professional installation is highly recommended to ensure the pool is properly set.

Phase 1: Planning and Excavation

 

  1. Obtain Permits: Before any work begins, your installer must secure all required building permits from your local municipality. This process ensures the installation complies with local codes, setback requirements, and safety regulations.

  2. Utility Marking: Contact your local utility companies to have all underground lines (gas, electric, water, sewer) marked in your yard. This is a critical safety step to avoid damage during excavation.

  3. Site Layout: The pool's outline is laid out on your property using a "dig sheet" provided by the manufacturer. This sheet contains the precise measurements for the excavation, including the dimensions of the pool and the depth of the deep and shallow ends.

  4. Excavation: An excavator is used to dig the hole for the pool. The hole is typically dug slightly larger than the pool itself to allow for backfill material and proper plumbing installation. The bottom of the hole is graded to match the contours of the pool shell.

 

Phase 2: Setting the Pool Shell

 

  1. Base Preparation: A bed of gravel or sand is laid at the bottom of the excavated hole. This material is meticulously leveled and compacted to create a perfectly flat and stable foundation for the pool shell. A level base is crucial to prevent the pool from settling unevenly over time.

  2. Pool Delivery: The fiberglass pool shell is delivered to the site on a specialized trailer.

  3. Placement: A large crane is used to lift the pool shell from the trailer and carefully lower it into the prepared hole. This is a delicate process that requires expert precision to ensure the shell lands exactly in the correct position.

  4. Leveling: Once the shell is in the hole, the installer uses a laser level to check for any imperfections. They will adjust the base as needed to ensure the pool is perfectly level from all angles.

Phase 3: Plumbing and Backfilling (Simultaneous Process)

 

This is the most critical stage of the installation.

  1. Plumbing Connections: The pool's plumbing lines (skimmer, returns, main drain) are connected to the ports on the fiberglass shell. A sump pump is also recommended in cold and high-moisture areas.

  2. Backfilling: The space between the fiberglass shell and the excavated dirt walls is filled with a backfill material, typically gravel or sand.

  3. Simultaneous Filling: The pool is filled with water at the same time as the backfill material is added. This is done in small, gradual increments (e.g., 6 inches of water, then 6 inches of backfill). This simultaneous filling is essential because it equalizes the pressure on the pool walls, preventing the shell from bulging inward or collapsing outward.

 

Phase 4: Decking and Equipment Installation

 

  1. Concrete Collar: After the pool is fully filled with water and backfill, a concrete "collar" or "bond beam" is poured around the perimeter of the pool. This permanently locks the shell into place and provides a stable foundation for the coping and decking.

  2. Equipment Pad: An equipment pad is placed nearby to hold the pump, filter, and other essential equipment. The plumbing and electrical lines are connected to the pad, and all systems are professionally installed and tested.

  3. Decking and Coping: The final stage of construction involves installing the coping (the material that caps the edge of the pool) and the surrounding decking (concrete, pavers, etc.).
